Washington St. Upends No. 17 Washington

Jan 31, 2011 6:22 AM

Washington State, led by Klay Thompson's 25 points, upset No. 17 Washington 87-80 on Sunday night.

"We're going to try to make a lot of noise the second half of the season," Thompson said.

In fact, Thompson thinks the Cougars can win out and claim the Pac-10 title.

"I think we have a chance to run the table," said Thompson, who leads the Pac-10 in scoring at 22 points per game. "I think we can be the best team in the league, and we showed that tonight."

Washington State held high-scoring Washington to 37 percent shooting and forced 23 turnovers.

Washington To Guard Klay Thompson Similarly To Derrick Williams

Jan 29, 2011 11:40 PM

Washington intends to defend Washington State's Klay Thompson in a similar nature to their strategy when they played Derrick Williams of Arizona.

"You have to play him like we did (Arizona's) Derrick Williams," junior forward Darnell Gant said. "When you have good players like that, you want to limit their touches and crowd them. Make it seem as if they can't get their shot off."

Lorenzo Romar has noticed Thompson's ability to get to the line as a change in his game.

"When Klay was a freshman, I think we played them towards the end of the year, and he had gone to the foul line like 22 times the whole year because he was more or less a catch-and-shoot guy," Romar said. "He's changed that (to) being a very good defender.

"He gets a lot of steals. He's second in the league in assists. He gets to the foul line. He can put the ball on the floor and drive it now. He's just evolved into so much more of a complete basketball player."

Klay Thompson's Family Pedigree Prepares Him For NBA

Washington State guard Klay Thompson's father Mychal was the number one overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft by the Blazers. At some point in the next two seasons, Thompson will also be drafted.

"I feel like I know what to expect at the next level because of my dad," Klay said Wednesday. "He's been there, he's been through it all and when I have questions about the game, I always turn to dad because I have a source that's close. He prepared me to play at the collegiate level."

Thompson has improved his defense, become a more aggressive rebounder and brought variety to his offensive game, said coach Ken Bone.

"He's midway through his junior year and he continues to grow as a player," Bone said. "He's finding ways, beyond just shooting to help his team be successful."

Washington State was the only Pac-10 school that offered Thompson a scholarship.

Washington State's Reggie Moore played against visiting Oregon State on Thursday night despite being arrested Tuesday on a marijuana possession charge from December.

A school spokesperson said Moore’s playing status could change at any time.

“This is a team matter that we take very seriously,” coach Ken Bone said in a statement released late Wednesday.

“We initially learned about this incident Dec. 12, and at this time we have dealt with and are still dealing with the issue. We will take further appropriate action if necessary.”

Moore played 34 minutes in the Cougars' 84-70 win, posting 11 points, nine assists and six rebounds.
